New Zealand: Doctor (IMG) — NZREX Clinical Pathway

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking to practice in New Zealand must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). The standard pathway for those without a recognised postgraduate qualification is to pass the NZREX Clinical examination. This assesses clinical competence and communication skills in a simulated environment. Upon passing, IMGs are granted provisional registration and must complete a period of supervised practice before general registration.

Step-by-Step Guide

Your Pathway to Success

Follow these steps to achieve your global medical career

Cost: $200 USD
Duration: 2-4 months

Create EPIC account and verify medical degree, transcripts, and internship completion via ECFMG.

Cost: $400
Duration: 1-2 months

Achieve IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with no band below 7.0, or OET Grade B in all subtests (minimum 350).

Cost: $3,500 NZD
Duration: 3-6 months study

Pass the 10-station OSCE held in Auckland, assessing history taking, physical exam, communication, and clinical reasoning.

Cost: $1,200 NZD
Duration: 1-2 months

Submit application to MCNZ with EPIC report, NZREX pass, and English scores. Obtain provisional registration.

Cost: Paid position
Duration: 12 months

Complete 12 months of supervised practice in an approved position, submitting quarterly supervisor reports.

Cost: $800 NZD
Duration: 1 month

Upon successful completion of supervised period, apply for general registration with full practice rights.
